Dismissal within Probationary Period more likely under new Employment Bill
The new Government's new Employment Bill will give employees rights from day one. This is likely to mean that the Probationary Period [usually three or six months] and something of a formality at the moment, will become an important milestone.
Many employers have historically managed the probationary period poorly, tending to pass new employees through the probationary period, or extending the probationary period, as there was little legal significance in waiting before deciding that it wasn't working out.
Going forward, having regular check-in meetings and reviews in the early weeks and months will become much more important, particularly if the new employee is not performing in the role - making tough calls and dismissing early is likely to be the norm.
